30 Travel Tips to Know Before You Visit the South Pacific

Planning your first South Pacific holiday? After travelling through Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia, these are the things we've found make the biggest difference. From saving money to packing smarter, here's what we think every traveller should know before they go.

🌴 Before You Leave
1. Visit during the dry season
For most South Pacific islands, April to November offers the best weather, with warm sunny days and less chance of rain.
2. Pre-book your hire car
Rental cars on smaller islands can book out months in advance, especially during school holidays.
3. Organise airport transfers if you're arriving late
Many flights arrive in the evening when transport options are limited.
4. Some Islands have drinkable tap water
Tap water is safe to drink in Vanuatu, New Caledonia and French Polynesia, so bring a reusable bottle and refill it as you go. It's an easy way reduce plastic waste.
5. Book domestic flights early

🎒 Packing Tips
6. BYO snorkel gear
You'll probably use it far more than you expect, it'll fit better than rental gear and save you money.
7. Take Hand Luggage Only
If you are only going for a week or so, you can save a lot of money by not adding luggage. It also makes moving between the islands a lot more easier. For our 3 weeks in Fiji we all just had hand luggage and it was great!
8. Pack reef-safe sunscreen & insect repellent
To help protect their beautiful coral reefs - We love Moo Goo!
9. Don't overpack
Most days you'll live in swimmers and a sarong.
10. Bring sarongs
One of the most useful things you can pack—for the beach, villages, picnics or even keeping the kids warm on a boat.
11. Reef shoes are optional—but handy
We've never actually travelled with reef shoes, and we've managed just fine. But there have definitely been a few chunks of coral that made us wished we'd packed them. If you've already got a pair, they're worth throwing in your suitcase—but we wouldn't buy them just for this trip.
🚗 Getting Around
12. Download offline maps before you arrive
Phone reception isn't always available once you leave the main towns. We love Maps.me
13. Never park under a coconut tree 🥥
It might be the only shade around, but coconuts can cause serious damage to vehicles.
14. Ask your accommodation about hire cars
Some Airbnb hosts and small resorts can help organise rental cars when none appear available online.
15. Be early for all ferries
Whether your travelling in Fiji, French Polynesia or New Caledonia be early for your Ferry - they will depart on time.
💰 Money & Food
16. Bring some cash & a fold up shopping bag
Markets, roadside stalls and small village shops often only accept cash.
17. Buy fruit and vegetables from roadside stalls
They generally have the freshest produce and it's a great way to support local families.
18. Don't expect Australian supermarket prices
Many islands import much of their food, so groceries can be surprisingly expensive.
19. Keep small notes handy
They're useful for markets, fresh coconuts, taxis and small purchases.

20. Slow down and embrace island time
Life moves at a slower pace in the South Pacific. Meals and drinks can take a little longer than you are used to, so sit back and relax. After all - you're on Island Time.
21. Talk to the locals
Some of our favourite beaches, snorkelling spots and restaurants came from local recommendations.
22. Don't plan every minute
Leave time for unexpected adventures.
23. Respect local customs
Dress appropriately when visiting villages and always be respectful of local traditions.
🤿 Beaches & Snorkelling
24. Don't wear sand-coloured thongs 😂
It sounds ridiculous until it happens. You'll kick them while admiring one of the most beautiful beaches you've ever seen, wander into the crystal-clear water, then come back later wondering where they went. White sand and beige thongs are a terrible combination—we've learnt that one the hard way!
25. Snorkel straight from the beach
Some of the best snorkelling we've experienced didn't require a tour. Travel tip! we always had the best luck snorkelling with turtles in Rarotonga just before sunset.
26. Don't underestimate the tropical sun
Even cloudy days can leave you sunburnt.
27. Take a waterproof phone pouch
You'll end up wanting photos in the water more often than you think.

28. Check compulsory resort meal plans
Some island resorts require guests to purchase daily meal packages. Include this when comparing resort prices.
29. Travel insurance is worth it
Weather, ferries and unexpected medical issues can all affect island holidays.
30. Every island is completely different Don't expect Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia to feel the same. Each has its own culture, landscapes and pace of life—that's what makes exploring the South Pacific so special.
