Travelling from Almaty to Bishkek by bus is a simple and affordable way to travel between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
The drive itself was comfortable and straightforward, taking around 4 hours from Almaty to Bishkek, including crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan.
If you're planning to take the bus from Almaty to Bishkek, here's everything you need to know about buying tickets, bus times, the border crossing and what to expect along the way.
How to Buy Almaty to Bishkek Bus Tickets
If you want to get the bus time and date that you prefer, it's best to book your Almaty to Bishkek bus tickets online through 12Go before your trip. This way, you know your seats are confirmed and don't have to worry about your preferred bus being sold out when you arrive at the station.
If you're a little more flexible with your travel plans, you can also buy your tickets directly from the bus station. I'd recommend heading to the station a day or two before your journey to book, especially if you have a particular departure time in mind.
Where Does the Almaty to Bishkek Bus Leave From?
The bus from Almaty to Bishkek leaves from Sayran Bus Station, located at 294 Tole Bi Street in Almaty.
I'd recommend arriving at the bus station at least 30 minutes before your departure time. This gives you enough time to find your bus, load your luggage and get settled without having to rush.
If you've booked your ticket online through 12Go, double-check the departure details on your ticket before you leave, just in case anything has changed.
Almaty to Bishkek Bus Times
There are currently five buses a day from Almaty to Bishkek, departing from Sayran Bus Station at:
8:00 am
10:00 am
12:00 pm
2:00 pm
6:00 pm
The journey takes around 4hrs. Bus times can change, so make sure you check the latest timetable before you travel.
Almaty to Bishkek Bus Cost
Bus tickets from Almaty to Bishkek currently cost around 3,325 KZT (roughly $10–$12 AUD) per person, making the bus a really cheap way to travel between the two cities.
It's considerably cheaper than flying or taking a private taxi or transfer, and for a journey of only around four hours, I think it's excellent value.
If you're travelling through Central Asia on a budget, we'd definitely recommend taking the bus.
What Is the Bus Like?
The bus from Almaty to Bishkek was comfortable and an easy ride and the 4 hours went by pretty quickly. It's a proper coach-style bus with a seat for everyone, rather than a small minibus or marshrutka.
The road itself was relatively quiet and smooth, and it's mostly an easy, flat drive. There are no big mountain passes or particularly rough road conditions to worry about along the way.
I'd recommend bringing some water and snacks with you for the journey, especially if you're travelling with kids.
Crossing the Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan Border
The border crossing is probably the only slightly hectic part of the journey, mainly because everything feels a little rushed.
Once you arrive at the border, you need to take everything that belongs to you off the bus. This includes anything you have with you on the coach, as well as all your luggage stored underneath.
It's a good idea to keep your things together and easy to grab, as the drivers want everyone off the bus and through the border fairly quickly.
From there, you carry all your luggage with you across the border. You'll go through passport control to exit Kazakhstan, walk across the border and then go through immigration to enter Kyrgyzstan. Your bags will also need to go through an X-ray machine.
The process itself is pretty straightforward, and once you're through, you'll need to find your bus again on the Kyrgyzstan side.
TRAVEL TIP: Before you leave Almaty, take a quick photo of your bus and its number plate. There can be several buses waiting on the other side of the border, and it makes finding yours again much easier.
Arriving in Bishkek
The bus arrives at Western Bus Station in Bishkek.
We had already booked our accommodation at Apple Hostel, which was only a couple of minutes' walk from the bus station. This made things really easy when we arrived, as we could grab our bags and walk straight to our accommodation.
We highly recommend Apple Hostel. It's a great, social place to stay and the location is especially handy if you're arriving in Bishkek by bus or planning more bus travel during your time in Kyrgyzstan. There are also supermarkets and ATMs nearby, which is really handy when you first arrive.
Our Tips Before You Go
A few simple things can make the Almaty to Bishkek bus journey even easier:
Pre-book your bus ticket – If you know what day and time you want to travel, book your ticket in advance through 12Go. It's nice having the peace of mind that your seats are confirmed before you arrive at the station.
Take a photo of your bus and number plate – Do this before you leave Almaty. Once you've crossed the border, there may be several buses waiting and you'll need to find yours again.
Keep your belongings together – You'll need to take everything off the bus at the border, including your luggage underneath. Having your things organised and easy to grab makes this much less stressful.
Keep your passport and valuables with you – Have your passport somewhere secure but easy to access, as you'll obviously need it at both sides of the border.
Bring water and snacks – It's around a four-hour journey.
Bring something for the journey – A good book or podcasts and a sarong or light jumper that can double as a pillow can make the journey a little more comfortable.
