Best things to do in Efate, Vanuatu

After spending time exploring Efate both on our recent trip and previous visits, these are the places we'd recommend most. From crystal-clear swimming holes and waterfalls to beautiful beaches and island adventures, these are the experiences that made us fall in love with Vanuatu.

1. Swim in the Blue Lagoon

One of Vanuatu's most famous swimming spots, the Blue Lagoon is every bit as beautiful as the photos suggest. The bright turquoise water is crystal clear and perfect for cooling off on a hot day. Kids will love jumping from the rope swings, while everyone else can simply relax and float in the freshwater.

Don't miss: Arrive early if you can—it's much quieter before the tour buses arrive.

2. Visit Mele Cascades

If you're happy for a little adventure, Mele Cascades is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on Efate. A short walk takes you through tropical rainforest to a series of natural pools where you can swim beneath cascading water.

It's one of the island's classic attractions and well worth adding to your itinerary.

Good to know: Entry fees have increased in recent years, and it now costs around AUD $70 for a family of four to visit. While it's a beautiful spot, budget-conscious travellers may prefer to spend the day at some of Efate's incredible beaches and swimming holes instead.

3. Relax at Eton Beach

If you're looking for the perfect, quiet white sand beach, Eton Beach is hard to beat. Calm, clear water makes it ideal for families, and it's an easy place to spend a few relaxing hours swimming, snorkelling or simply enjoying the scenery.

Bring a picnic and take your time—this is island life at its best.

Our Tip: Pack your snorkel gear, even at low tide there are plenty of fish to see.

4. Explore Eton Rock Pools

Just a short drive from Eton Beach (10-15mins south on Ring Road) are the beautiful Eton Rock Pools. These natural pools fill with crystal-clear turquoise seawater and are protected from the larger ocean swells, making them a fun place to swim and explore.

They've become one of our favourite hidden gems on Efate.

5. Escape to Moso Island

If you want to experience a quieter side of Vanuatu, Moso Island is the perfect getaway. There are no roads, no crowds and only a couple of small villages. Spend your days snorkelling, kayaking, relaxing on secluded beaches or simply slowing down and enjoying island life.

It's easily one of our favourite places in Vanuatu.

6. Take a Blue Cave Tour

One of the highlights of our trip was exploring the beautiful Blue Cave Tour around Moso Island. You'll get to snorkle some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the country, as well as spotting turtles, swimming with large clams and a visit to the local village.

Travel Tip: Tours also depart from Port Vila.

7. Swim at La Cressonniere Waterfalls

A beautiful locals spot, La Cressonniere is a peaceful place where you can swim beneath waterfalls and cool off in natural pools. It's much less crowded than some of the better-known attractions and makes a lovely stop if you're exploring the island by car.

Bring your swimmers—you'll definitely want to jump in.

8. Spend a Day on Hideaway Island

Hideaway Island is famous for one thing—the world's only underwater post office—but there's plenty more to enjoy. You can stay at the Hideaway Island Resort, or just do day trip over. Snorkelling straight off the beach is fantastic, with colourful coral and tropical fish just metres from shore.

Don't forget to post a waterproof postcard while you're there!
